Thurgood Marshall, Associate Justice, United States Supreme Court
Exclaiming "Oh, Thurgood!" Chief Justice Rehnquist embraced Justice Marshall in a bear hug.
He argued that the right to an education should be regarded as a "fundamental" constitutional right, and that state policies that have the effect of discriminating on the basis of wealth should be subject to especially searching judicial scrutiny.
In its public school cases, the initial focus of the N.A.A.C.P., and later of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which became a separate entity in 1957, was to seek to equalize the resources available to the all-black schools in segregated systems.

Sandra Day O'Connor Associate Justice United States Supreme Court
During her time on the court Justice O'Connor was regarded as a consummate compromiser.

 Associate Justice, Miguel Roberto Torres
I expected to be named Chief Justice, but that position was given to colleague of mine, Humberto Menéndez, who had been involved with the party since its inception and had had experience with the Esperanzan Supreme Court.
I disagreed with a lot of the policies, as did some fellow justices of mine who were able to preserve their positions in the same manner I did, but I stayed on the bench in hopes of affirming any land reform legislation that came the Court’s way.
During our ten-year tenure, we heard many cases from campesinos regarding land reform.

The Jaded JD: NARAL WINS! President Withdraws Roberts's Nomination as Associate Justice!!*
I suspect Justice Breyer's knees and Chief Justice Roberts's prospective chambers are really the most significant changes to arise out of the nomination swap.
If I remember right from my reading of Chief Justice Rehnquist's The Supreme Court over vacation a few weeks ago, upon elevation, Chief Justice Rehnquist eschewed the customary chief justicial chambers next to the Conference room to keep the more scenic chambers he held as Associate Justice.
He's definitely capable of surpassing Chief Justices Taney (1836-63) and Fuller (1888-1909).
