Gilpin was appointed United States attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1832, and Solicitor of the United States Treasury in 1837.
Williams was nominated to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1873, but was never confirmed.
He was United States attorney for Massachusetts from 1959 to 1961, and in 1961 served as a special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States.
