The United States dollar is the official currency (The metal or paper medium of exchange that is presently used) of the United States (North American republic containing 50 states - 48 conterminous states in North America plus Alaska in northwest North America and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean; achieved independence in 1776).
Thus the United States moved to a gold standard (A paragon of excellence), made gold the sole legal-tender coinage of the United States, and set the value of the dollar at $20.67 per ounce (66.46 ¢/g) of gold.
The dollar was unanimously chosen as the monetary unit for the United States on July 6, 1785.
