Brief (law) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A brief or factum (latin for "act" or "deed") is a written legal document used in various legal adversary systems that is presented to a court arguing why the party to the case should prevail.
A brief is also sometimes called a memorandum of law, although that term is also used to describe an internal document in a law firm in which an attorney attempts to analyze a client's legal position without arguing for a specific interpretation of the law.
The brief or memorandum establishes the legal argument for the party, explaining why the reviewing court should affirm or reverse the lower court's judgment based on legal precedent and citations to the controlling cases or statutory law.

 Government Briefs
The Solicitor General files a number of different types of briefs or other pleadings with the Supreme Court, depending primarily on (i) the type of case, (ii) the stage of proceedings, and (iii) whether the government is a party to the case or an amicus curiae.
Briefs are grouped by the Supreme Court Term during which they are filed.
Each brief is keyed to a limited number of headings (often only one), although the case may involve many different legal issues.

Briefs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Britain the term "jockeys" has not caught on, and briefs are often referred to as "Y-fronts", even though the fly opening may differ in style and not actually form the shape of the letter "Y".
The term originally was derogatory in nature and was coined by wearers of boxer shorts to make fun of those who wore briefs, although the name has become mainstream and is usually accepted as the name of briefs.
"Tighty whities" is a common American nickname for briefs.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Bulls and Briefs
Brief imprecatory clauses, like Nulli ergo, Si quis autem, are usually included, the pope's name at the beginning is written in large letters, and the initial is an ornamental capital, while the leaden seal is attached with silken laces of red and yellow.
Bulls are now written in the same clear Roman script that is used for briefs, and in view of the difficulties arising from transmission by post, the old leaden seal is replaced in many cases by a simple stamp bearing the same device in red ink.
A brief (breve, i.e., "short") was a compendious papal letter which dispensed with some of the formalities previously insisted on.
