Citizenship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Citizenship derives from a legal relationship with a state.
Union citizenship continues to gain in status and the European Court of Justice has stated that Union citizenship will be the "fundamental status of nationals of Member States" (see Case C-184/99 Rudy Grzelczyk v Centre Public d'Aide Sociale d'Ottignes-Louvain-la-Neuve, [2001] ECR I-6193, para 31).
Citizenship most usually relates to membership of the nation state, but the term can also apply at subnational level.

British nationality law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British citizenship is the most common type of British nationality, and the only one that automatically carries a right of abode in the United Kingdom.
The British Nationality Act 1948 established the status of Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies (CUKC), the national citizenship of the United Kingdom and those colonies still under her control.
In 1705, the English Parliament passed the Sophia Naturalization Act which granted British citizenship to the Electress Sophia of Hanover, the heir to the throne under the Act of Settlement 1701.

 British citizenship: UK Immigration
Becoming a British citizen is often a natural progression for people who have come to the UK in an employment based category such as work permit, UK ancestry etc., obtained indefinite leave to remain after four years and have become eligible for an application to naturalise as a British citizen a year later.
Children under 18 may not be naturalised as British citizens but, depending on the circumstances, can often become registered as such.
We can advise on many nationality matters such as whether a particular individual is already a British citizen or routes by which they may become one.

To apply for full British citizenship (with right of abode in the UK) for the child, the parents should approach the Consular section of the British Consulate-General at 1 Supreme Court Road, Hong Kong (Tel: 2901 3281 or email: consular@bcg.org.hk) to obtain the relevant application forms, which are Guide B(OS) and Form B(OS).
The advantages of Consular Birth registration are that British birth certificates stating the child's claim to British Overseas citizenship are available and that permanent and always accessible records of such entries are maintained at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom.
The parents can apply for the birth to be registered at the British Consulate who can issue a British birth certificate.

Background to British Nationality Law from BritainUSA
The United Kingdom legislation, the British Nationality Act 1948, created the status of British subject: Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies (BS/CUKC) for all those whose connection was with the United Kingdom itself or with a place which, on 1 January 1949, was still a colony.
The status of British subject implied allegiance to the Crown.
Normally those CUKCs who acquired citizenship of the newly independent country ceased to be CUKCs on independence day unless they possessed specified connections with the United Kingdom itself, or with a place which remained a colony.
