Civilization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From 1388 the word “civil” appeared in English, whilst “civilization” as a “law which makes a criminal process civil”, appeared in 1704, closely followed in 1722 with “civilization” meaning the opposite of “barbarity” coming probably from the French language at about that time.
Toynbee explored civilization processes in his multi-volume A Study of History, which traced the rise and, in most cases, the decline of 21 civilizations and five "arrested civilizations".
Sumer, which was Mesopotamia's first civilization in what is now Iraq, is recognized as the world's earliest civilization.

 Lecture 1: What is Civilization?
These civilizations were urban, productive, religious and law abiding and in all meanings of the word, civilized.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines civilization as "the action or process of civilizing or of being civilized; a developed or advanced state of human society." Such a definition is fraught with difficulties.
One definition of civilization requires that a civilized people have a sense of history -- meaning that the past counts in the present.

The Primitivist Critique of Civilization--Richard Heinberg
We civilized people appear to act as though we were addicted to a powerful drug--a drug that comes in the forms of money, factory-made goods, oil, and electricity.
Here we are, after all, some of the most civilized people on the planet, discussing in the most civilized way imaginable whether civilization itself might be an error.
While I advocate taking a critical look at civilization, I am not suggesting that we are now in position to render a final judgment on it.

MKaku.org Articles “The Physics of Extra-Terrestrial Civilizations”
Even an advanced civilization is bound by the laws of thermodynamics, especially the Second Law, and can hence be ranked by the energy at their disposal.
Although any conjecture about such advanced civilizations is a matter of sheer speculation, one can still use the laws of physics to place upper and lower limits on these civilizations.
For example, a Type I civilization is a truly planetary one, which has mastered most forms of planetary energy.
