Topic: Constitutional Convention (Australia)

 Constitutional Convention --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Australia's constitution, which can be considered crudely as an amalgam of the constitutional forms of the United Kingdom and the United States, was adopted in 1900 and entered into force in 1901.
The purpose of the convention was to amend the inefficient Articles of Confederation that had served as the preliminary constitution for the United States since 1781.
The Constitution was written during the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by 55 delegates to a Constitutional Convention that was called ostensibly to amend the Articles of Confederation (1781–89), the country's first written constitution.

Article VII of the Constitution stated that it would become the law of the land with the approval of nine of the thirteen states.
Other issues, such as the method of electing and term of office of the president, and the continuation of the slave trade, were also settled by compromise.
It was attended by delegates from all the states except Rhode Island, whose refusal to join made it impossible to get the unanimous vote needed to amend the Articles.

 Republicans still face hard struggle
New South Wales, a traditionally-republican state, came out against the model, but for the republic in principle.
Voters were asked if they supported the status quo, or the republican model chosen by the convention in Canberra - a cautious model in which the president would be appointed by parliament, with only limited public involvement at the nominations stage.
Days after the Constitutional Convention voted overwhelmingly to put the question to the people in 1999, the poll showed support for a republic varying widely from state to state.

Thus only two tickets to the constitutional convention are given any real coverage on TV or in the papers: the reactionary Australians for Constitutional Monarchy; and the extreme minimalist Australian Republican Movement, headed up by the merchant banker and Liberal Party member Malcolm Turnbull.
Howard and those who support him are determined to allow only the most minimal of changes to the present constitution and the 'mainstream' media has dutifully followed the party line.
