Court citation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cases from the Supreme Court of the United States are officially printed in the United States Reports (U.S.).
Court citation is a standard system used in common law countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to uniquely identify the location of past court cases in special series of books called reporters.
Some court systems—such as the California state court system and the federal Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit—forbid attorneys to cite unpublished cases as precedent.

 Basic Legal Citation: § 2-200
The highest appellate court in a state is indicated by the abbreviation for the state standing alone.
While § 2-220 outlines the format to use in citing "unpublished" cases, court rules may well instruct that decisions the court has affirmatively designated not to be published should not be cited at all (or at least not unless they bear directly on a subsequent matter as, for example, through res judicata).
Since the decisions of American courts generally deal with multiple issues and tend to be lengthy, recounting preligitation facts and procedural events of limited relevance to the points for which they might be cited, it is rarely enough simply to cite the case.

 Recapitulation of Citations
Often the lower court is not a court of record, such as a small claims court.
Court rules are promulgated by courts themselves or by conferences of judges, usually under authority granted by statute.
Usually quite brief, a court's decision, narrowly conceived, is its ruling or disposition of the case.

AALL Citation Formats Committee - Universal Case Citation
Use the general citation form in Rule 4.2.1 for the United States Courtof Appeals and any state intermediate appeals court which is formally named a "Court of Appeals," "Appeals Court" or "Appellate Court." Use the special citation form in Rule 4.2.2 for all other appellate courts.
A general citation form is offered for the majority of intermediate appellate courts which are simply denominated as courts of appeals.
For federal courts, the ABA approach uses fragments from law book citations --- such as "US," "5Cir," and "SDNY." For state courts, the ABA uses postal abbreviations for high courts and appends the suffix "App" to identify intermediate state appellate courts.
