The talks reopened amid acrimony, with the SLA accusing the government of breaking promises[21] that it made for the little-respected April ceasefire.
However, it is currently undecided whether prosecution will commence via the International Criminal Court, or via a provisional tribunal, such as the one used after the ethnic conflicts in Rwanda and in the Balkans.

The war ended in 1972 with an agreement that granted the South qualified autonomy.

My reply and the previous articles on Sudan made it perfectly clear that we are against western military intervention, whether under the auspices of individual governments, the United Nations or the Africa Union.
Please include in your response to these difficult questions specifically what actions the WSWS wishes its devotees to employ in the expression of our common outrage of the situation in Darfur.
Whether or not what is happening in Darfur constitutes a “genocide&; is quite beneath the WSWS in that it is nit-picking, as is your line-by-line analysis of the reader’s letter.

The SPLA has accepted not to mention the Darfur crisis in the course of the negotiations while the Khartoum government is trying to delay the signature of any agreement with the South long enough to crush the western insurrection.
The reaction of the Khartoum government was a mixture of panic, unrealistic accusation (Israel, the United States, the southern Sudanese rebel movement the SPLA and Eritrea were all held responsible for the uprising) and denial of the political reality.
But since unlike him they support the insurrection of their cousins in Darfur, there is a major contradiction between the head of state and the people who most closely support him.

A UN International Commission of Inquiry into the Darfur violence recommended that some of the human rights abuses be referred to the International Criminal Court.
United Nations media sources, for example, have noted "a lack of accurate information on the conflict" and Reuters has also stated that "it is hard to independently verify claims by government or rebels in Darfur." This has served to further distort perceptions of the crisis.

Some 7,000 African Union troops have slowly been deployed in Darfur on a very limited mandate.
They have announced the trials in Khartoum of some members of the security forces suspected of abuses - but this is viewed as part of a campaign against UN-backed attempts to get some 50 key suspects tried at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
In April 2006, the UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing sanctions against four Sudanese nationals accused of war crimes in Darfur that include two rebel leaders, a former air force chief, and a Janjaweed militia leader.

A peace agreement in the southern conflict won't end the war in Darfur, as the rebels there quite naturally reject the southern factions' authority to speak for them.
