 The Shocking Truth About Electrocution
The rejection of electrocution accelerated at the dawn of the modern death penalty era when in 1977 Oklahoma became the first state in the union to authorize lethal injection -- nearly every state, save the six that retain electrocution as its sole means of execution, have adopted lethal injection as a means of execution.
Electrocution has been rejected as a form of euthanasia for animals in the United States.
California, 370 U.S. "The Court has not spoken squarely on the underlying issue [electrocution] since [the 1890's] and the holding of that case does not constitute a dispositive response to litigation of the issue in light of modern knowledge about the method of execution in question." Poyner v.

USATODAY.com - Ga. high court strikes down use of electric chair
The law left electrocution on the books for those convicted of crimes before that date but stipulated a switch to lethal injection if the courts outlawed electrocution.
The court said electrocution, "with its specter of excruciating pain and its certainty of cooked brains and blistered bodies, violates the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment."
A year ago, Justice Norman Fletcher, now the chief justice, noted in an opinion that some members had "grave concerns about the humaneness of electrocution." He said they were willing to confront the issue if presented with "sufficient" evidence.

 America's Debate -> Electrocution
Electrocution is authorized in ten states (AL, AK, FL, IL, KY, NE, OK, SC, TN, VA) and in one of those states, Nebraska, it is the only authorized method of execution.
I'm all for the chair, in the constitution, in the 8th Amendment it says "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted", this is talking about like how Iraq was to its ppl, not putting someone to the chair.
But electrocution should be banned because of most of the reasons stated above.

 Methods of Execution
Nebraska is the only state that provides for electrocution as the sole method of execution.
See, In re Kemmler, 136 U.S. The last state to adopt electrocution as a method of execution was in 1949.
Of the countries outside the United States that impose capital punishment, none prescribe execution by electrocution.

[PRISONACT] NYTimes.com Article: Supreme Court of Georgia Voids Use of Electrocution
The court had been expected to decide the issue last year in a Florida case, but after the Florida Legislature changed its law to give inmates a choice between electrocution and lethal injection, the court dismissed the appeal as moot.
In some of those states, only those who committed their offenses or were sentenced before a particular date may choose another method.
The law also substituted lethal injection for those sentenced to death for crimes committed after May 1, 2000, but there have been no capital convictions since that date.

 The electric chair
His execution was stayed and in the meantime (21/11/01) Ohio altered its law to allow only lethal injection.
150 men and 2 women have been electrocuted in the U.S.A. since the Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1977, up to December 2004 (including 5 in 2000), making it the second most common method (after lethal injection).
Georgia's highest court struck down the state's use of the electric chair on October 5th 2001 on the basis that death by electrocution "inflicts purposeless physical violence and needless mutilation that makes no measurable contribution to accepted goals of punishment.''

National Electrical Safety Month: CPSC Alerts Consumers To Electrocution Hazards From Overhead Power Lines

Consumers should never place a ladder, antenna, or anything else near a power line," stated CPSC Acting Chairman Thomas Moore.

Electrocution Hazard Prompts Recall Of 12,000 Hair Dryers
CPSC estimates that 17 people -- 10 of whom are children under 10 years of age -- are electrocuted each year in similar accidents involving hand-held hair dryers.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the hair dryer does not protect consumers against the possibility of electrocution should the product fall into a water-filled sink or bathtub while the switch is in the "off" position.
