Nationalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jacobin creation of a unitary and centralist French state, is often seen as the original version of state nationalism.
National identity and unity were imposed from above, by European states, because they were necessary to modernise economy and society.
Most of the world's population now lives in states which are, at least nominally, nation states.

 ETHNIC NATIONALISM (I)
Under the auspices of the United Nations and the European Union, efforts are now being made to heal the breach by some kind of federal arrangement that would again permit Greek and Turkish Cypriots to live together in harmony.
[5] The evolution of modernity was made possible by state nations able to promote the dream of a national state.
Administrative autonomy within the boundaries of an existing state is an option that can permit different ethnic nations to co-exist within the same boundaries.

 Nationalism
The strongest claim is typical of classical nationalism: its typical norms are both moral and, once the nation-state is in place, legally enforceable obligations in regard to all parties concerned, including the individual members of the ethno-nation.
While many states are nations in some sense, there are many nations which are not fully sovereign states.
However, classical nationalism is not only concerned with the creation of a state but also with its maintenance and strengthening.

Thus, linked as it is with the modern state, nationalism must cope in one way or another with the universalistic demands of "mass democracy" and "the equal rights of the governed" that are implicit in a legal-rational political system.
We may assume that all cases of nationalism experience pressure in both directions, inclining toward one type of nationalism or the other depending on circumstances.
Particularly in the American case, for example, the national ideal is in part a multiethnic and nondiscriminatory one, expressed inclusively in terms of a "people of peoples." We shall label this type, "liberal nationalism."

 Ethnicity & Nationalism
The distinguishing mark of nationalism is by definition its relationship to the state.
In an influential study of ethnic identity in the United States, Glazer and Moynihan (1963) stated that the most important point to be made about the "American melting-pot" is that it never occurred.
In accordance with common terminology, these groups may be described as "nations without a state".

 ETHNIC NATIONALISM (II)
The rise of ethnic nationalism and terrorism, therefore, is as much the result of the failures of recognized states as it is the result of claims for national unification (involving boundary changes) or for self determination (made possible only by secession from an existing state or by grants of autonomy within that state).
Ethnic nationalism is born, under modern conditions, in such groups.
Although his examples reveal a concern by nation states for their own nationals in other countries, he does not portray the efforts by diasporas to influence the policies of the states in which they live, a dimension that needs to be added to our research agenda.

 Ethnic Nationalism
The constitution also recognized constituent nations for Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Montenegrins, and Macedonians.
These resulted in political parties representing the various national groups being elected to parliamentary and governmental positions.
The Serbian forces are not the only criminals in this war.

Today, the historical remnants of these pasts continue to create problems for any simple idea of "sovereign independence" when such claims are subordinated in the U.S. to Acts of Congress and in Canada to complex treaty situations and fundamnetal Canadian Law.

 ETHNIC NATIONALISM - ABSTRACT
The two aspects have accompanied each other from the start of the main processes of modernity which include industrialization, democratization and nationalism.
Nationalism, democracy and economic growth were celebrated in the imperial homelands but not in the conquered domains -- that is, until the quest for these precious things led to liberation movements and the emergence of successor states whose boundaries had been created for the administration of imperial possessions.
Modern ethnicity has been generated by these processes of modernization, including the aspirations and weapons produced by industrialism; equalitarian dreams spawned by democratization; and dreams of national self-determination learned from national states.

 Ethnic Nationalism
His personal experiences with the emergence of nationalism and fractious ethnic politics and warfare, movingly recounted here, stand as compelling testimony to the historical drama so thoroughly and incisively detailed in this remarkable book.
If the leaders of Serbia and Croatia can get away with tearing apart Bosnia-Herzegovina, a sovereign member of the United Nations, what is to stop military elites in other former Soviet and East European states from proposing similar solutions to their own national grievances and aspirations?
His discussion of the possible fate of postcommunist states is especially pertinent, and leads to a skillful account of the sources and dangers of nationalistic and ethnic extremism on what threatens to become a global scale.
