Topic: Ethnic persecution

WG 3 DRAFT 1: Ethnicity and Religion - 50th Annual Conference
Ethnic identity, constructed on the basis of historical or political myths, is considered as a collective reaction to a community's political position whether that might be one of dominance under threat, or one of resistance to enforced marginality.
If we seek to understand ethnic conflicts, attention must be given the complex relationship between the warring factions' exclusive sense of collective identity and their mutually opposed explanations and legitimising accounts of the roots and raison d'être of the necessity or inevitability of violence.
Above all, when we explore people's force of attachment to ethnic sentiments in contemporary societies, and the reality of actions taken in the name of cultural “difference” which is often labelled “ethnic”, what emerges with problematic frequency especially in situations of conflict, is that such differences are presented as natural, inherited and immutable characteristics.

 Jiang Zemin’s Personal Crusade:
The “law” was made specifically to aid the persecution of Falun Gong at that time.
Jiang's persecution has thus put these policemen and officials in a position in which they have to choose between profit and freedom from punishment on the one hand, or living according to their moral principles on the other.
There are, of course, other examples of persecution campaigns in China at present, including the official suppression of Tibetan Buddhists and Christian “house churches.” The government’s campaign against Falun Gong, though, distinguishes itself by virtue of the sheer number of persons affected and the intensity of the campaign.

At the most general level, however, ethnic cleansing can be understood as the expulsion of an "undesirable" population from a given territory due to religious or ethnic discrimination, political, strategic or ideological considerations, or a combination of these.
Deportation is generally done by order of the government rather than a court, and as such is often subject to a simpler legal process (or none), with reduced or no right to trial, legal representation or appeal.
There are, in that sense, no general legal or "right" definitions, although during the 20th century, all terms acquired legal — yet also changing — definitions.

Persecution of ethnic Germans was much the same in Australia as it was in the United States during World War I. To avoid persecution, many Germans changed their names into anglicised or Francophone variants.

Comparing the MI5 Persecution with German "Final Solution"
Since the MI5 persecution is carried out by the "permanent goverment" establishment in the UK, a change of political administration makes no difference to the course of the persecution, and the Security Service continues its campaign against a troublesome "untermenschen" minority.
In both cases there is a whiff of "holy war" or irrational obsession with the persecution.
There is widespread complicity through inaction of populace; and in a substantial proportion of the mainstread population, the persecution had/has widespread enthusiastic support; yet in both the German case in the 1940s and the British today, the existence of persecution is a mass secret which must be never admitted out loud.

 War and Ethnic Cleansing
Although Hitler's anti-Semitism was abundantly clear by the autumn of 1939, the real persecution, in the sense of mass extermination or holocaust, did not start until nearly four years later, in 1943 - nor could it conceivably have occurred except in the circumstances of war.
Nor did we go to war, as nine out of 10 Britons seem to believe, through any moral or high-principled reaction to Hitler's persecution of the Jews.
I mention these unwelcome facts only because the myth that we went to war for moral reasons - and to rid the world of ethnic cleansing - now encourages twerpish young would-be Winston Churchills like Tony Blair to indulge their power fantasies at our expense.
