European Patent Convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A single patent application may be filed at the European Patent Office at Munich, at its branches at The Hague or Berlin or at a national patent office of a Contracting State, if the national law of the State so permits.
Greece deposited its instrument of ratification on December 13, 2005, and was the fifteenth Contracting State to ratify or accede to the revised Convention, known as the EPC 2000 [1].
The Convention on the Grant of European Patents of 5 October 1973, commonly known as the European Patent Convention (EPC), is a multilateral treaty instituting the European Patent Organisation and providing an autonomous legal system according to which European patents are granted.

Software patents under the European Patent Convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One motivation for the controversial draft EU Directive on the Patentability of Computer-Implemented Inventions was to establish common practice for the national courts; and which, in cases of doubt as to its interpretation, would create a requirement for national courts of last instance to seek a ruling from the European Court of Justice.
A European patent on a computer-implemented invention, like each and every European patent no matter what it relates to, may therefore be issued by the European Patent Office, but subsequently it may potentially be not upheld in a patent infringement lawsuit or a revocation proceeding before a national court.
Patents which qualify as software patents according to some definitions of the expression "software patent" have been granted by the European Patent Office (EPO) since the '80s.

The patentability of business methods at the European Patent Office (in Patents > Business methods @ iusmentis.com)
During examination of a European patent application, the examiner is encouraged to skip the determination of technical considerations and to go directly to the assessment of novelty and inventive step.
In drafting the EPC, it was considered self-evident that an invention must constitute "technical progress" to be patentable, and so it was unnecessary to include a statement to this effect in Article 52.
This in turn has led to an increase in the number of software patents and business method patents in Europe.
