Canadian Journal of History: Hitler's Enforcers: The Gestapo and the SS Security Service in the Nazi Revolution
The first examines the development of the Gestapo and Kripo from the Weimar era through 1936, when the political and criminal police forces were merged into a single security police (Sipo) and fused with the Nazi party's security service (S.D.).
For instance, after the Nuremberg Laws of 1936, the Gestapo focused their investigations much more directly at Jews and cases of "race defilement." This involved them in persecution, but from their perspective, "It]he police role in all this was not extraordinary.
Heydrich controlled the development of two dominant agencies: the Sipo (Security Police) which included the Gestapo (Secret State Police) and the Kripo (Criminal Police); and the S.D. (Security Service of the S.S., the elite Nazi paramilitary force).

Its first commander was Rudolf Diels who recruited members from professional police departments and ran the Gestapo as a federal police agency, comparable to several modern examples such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Gestapo was formed when Herman Goring unified units of Prussian police with thousands of Nazi’s, many of which were members of the Storm Troopers.
In the years between 1933 to 1945 the Gestapo took on many changes in its structure and leadership, and as a result of this the functions of the Gestapo became unclear and were often integrated with those of other units of the German forces (Mainly SS units).
Goring became the leader of this new force on 26 April 1933, in which he took full responsibility for the actions of this ruthless organization.
