Ghetto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United States, between the abolition of slavery and the passing of the civil rights laws of the 1960s, discriminatory mores (sometimes codified in law) often forced urban African Americans to live in specific neighborhoods, which also became known as "ghettos".
In the Papal States, ghettos made somewhat less restrictive under Pope Pius IX (who relaxed many restrictions on Jews, but maintained others).
1960s civil rights laws allowed wealthier African Americans to emigrate to formerly all-white areas, the result of which was that the economic bases of many ghettos collapsed, leaving them zones of below-average wealth, poorly-maintained housing, and high crime.

Also, the federal government denied basic civil liberties to Native Americans regardless of their citizenship status, such as prohibiting the sale of liquor (prior to the Eighteenth Amendment) to any Native Americans.
Although Congress granted full citizenship to all Native Americans in 1924, the Bureau of Indian Affairs continued to exert a strict, overly protective power over the tribes much as had been the case in the late 1800s.
In 1928, Coolidge supported the Kellogg-Briand Pact an agreement that was initiated by France and signed by all but five nations in the world.

Population density within black ghettos increased to incredible heights, where people were described as "piling up" (Duncan and Duncan, 1957).
These acts granted African Americans such freedoms as the right to sue and be sued, to testify in the court, and to hold personal property and real estate.

It was the consolidation of a colonial state that made possible such terms, suited less to British sympathizers than to Filipino nationalist and American "anti-imperialist" oppositions.
A still later type has appeared which is superior to any which has existed heretofore; and with this new type will come a higher civilization than any which has preceded it.
The still powerful British investors would seek licenses, contracts, patronage, and equal tariffs from the American newcomers, and British importers and merchants would jockey with American rivals.

Mark Twain described the United States in the last few decades of the 19th century as the “Gilded Age.” What did he mean by this?

Similarly at odds with any such idea is the effort of the United States government at this time to vaccinate the native population.
As the United States expanded westward, such conflicts multiplied.
It is a firmly established fact that a mere 250,000 native Americans were still alive in the territory of the United States at the end of the 19th century.

The model of dyadic contract (reciprocal favors) works well to describe the situation where attendance at the "laying out" of a relative of a friend was mandatory.

A pitched battle raged, both on the prairie and in the Congress, over whether these territories were to become slave states or free states.
Slave states were established on the territories robbed from the Mexicans and Native Americans.

Reason magazine -- March 2000, Thought Reform 101 by Alan Charles Kors
In short, what moves the film (and American thought reform) is a denial of individual identity and responsibility, an insistence on group victimization and rights, and the belief that America is an almost uniquely iniquitous place in the world, without opportunity, legal equality, or justice.
To examine their work is to see into the heart of American re-education.

 Thomas Sowell: Summer de-programming
If you would like to know the fundamental basis for the Constitution of the United States under which we all live, there is no book more important to read than "The Federalist" or "The Federalist Papers," as it is sometimes called.
It is a series of popular essays written by those who helped create the Constitution, explaining to their fellow Americans why they did what they did and what they hoped to achieve -- and prevent.
For a history of American ethnic groups in general, there is my own "Ethnic America." I cannot be unbiased about it, of course, but the fact that it has been translated into six other languages suggests that other people liked it too.

Increasingly, Thoughtful American Jews Are Re-Thinking Zionism
I immediately thought of the stories my parents had told me of how Jews had been treated by the Nazis in the l930s, before the ghettos and death camps, of how Jews would be forced to clean sidewalks with toothbrushes and have their beards cut off in public.
THE IDEA THAT the majority of Americans of the Jewish faith support the policies of the government of Israel—an idea repeatedly set forth by generally unrepresentative organizations such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)—is one that is becoming increasingly untenable to support.
An American government that resolved to stop the settlements would not need to keep sending the secretary of state and other emissaries again and again to Jerusalem...We could prove it by deducting the total cost of the settlements each year from America’s annual allocation to Israel.”
