Gun politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Lott, claim to have discovered a positive correlation between gun control legislation and crimes in which criminals confront citizens - that is, increases in the number or strictness of gun control laws are correlated with increases in the number or severity of violent crimes.
Guns are of little use as self defense for the typical owner because in incidents where a hostile encounter with an armed criminal occurs, the criminal is usually more experienced and skilled with his/her weapon, also criminals may act in groups
In the United States another area of dispute is whether any requirement that firearms be registered constitutes a violation of the Second Amendment by impairing the exercise of that explicitly protected right.

 Talk:Gun politics - InfoSearchPoint.com
Gun rights advocates claim that gun control laws have not reduced violent crime rates and in fact often lead to more violent crime and all too often to government-sponsored exterminations and that such laws have no effect on the availbility of guns to criminals.
Choosing not to challenge a gun control law may have made that the de facto position, but not an official position.
Most people don't really care what the Second Amendment means, nor anything else relating to gun laws nor gun owners, all they want is for "something" to be done that actually reduces violent crime rates.

Lott, formerly of the University of Chicago and a gun control analyst who has conducted the most extensive study on the impact of concealed carry laws in the nation's history, the more liberal the right to carry, the less violent crime occurs.
In contrast to near-complete bans in Australia and Great Britain, many U.S. states have passed liberal concealed carry laws that allow private citizens to obtain a permit to carry a loaded gun at all times in most public places.
Lott, who examined a mass of crime data spanning decades in all 3,200-plus counties in the United States, concluded that the most important factor in the deterrence of violent crimes were increased police presence and longer jail sentences.
