 Left-wing politics - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
In politics, left-wing, political left, leftism, or simply the left, are terms that refer (with no particular precision) to the segment of the political spectrum typically associated with any of several strains of socialism, social democracy, or liberalism (especially in the American sense of the word), or with opposition to right-wing politics.
For example, the Democratic Leadership Council (in which Bill Clinton was active) is generally considered to form the right wing of the U.S. Democratic Party (which outside the US is considered to be right of center), but in terms of the whole country he was generally perceived as being on the moderate left.
The terminology of left-right politics was originally based on the seating-arrangement of parliamentary partisans during the French Revolution.

green politics is "on the left"; nonetheless, their economic policies can generally be considered left-wing, and when they have formed political coalitions (most notably in Germany, but also in local governments elsewhere), it has almost always been with groups that would generally be classified as being on the left.

 Fascism in Germany today
Richard Stösss Politics against Democracy: Right-wing Extremism in West Germany is a discussion of the development of right-wing extremism in Germany between the end of World War II and 1989, the year the original German edition was published, from a liberal perspective.
The final chapters examine explanations of the rise of right-wing extremism in the east, their limits and the favourable circumstances for right-wing extremism in united Germany.
But, in the west, it also gives legitimacy to the idea of an anti-fascist movement, as opposed to exclusively state initiated measures against right-wing extremism which Stöss and most of the BMI authors advocate.

It's a real shame, because there is a great need for serious strategic analysis today, and the often dogmatic and sectarian quibbling over Kerry is a real obstacle to creating the kind of unified left that is so necessary in the United States.

deseretnews.com Policy group tackles Utah's radical politics
Political extremism in Utah comes from both the left and the right, but understanding both views could lead to lasting compromises.
Although Crim said he takes "heat from extreme left for this dialogue," he believes it is important for both sides of the political spectrum to work together and compromise.
Mero shared characteristics of the right-wing extremism of Utah politics: self-righteousness, an uncommonly angry mind, self-absorbed patriotism, irrational speculation, exclusivity, disdain for democracy, perversely worshipful view of America's Founding Fathers and disdain for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Far right - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The imprecise use of the terms "left" and "right" in politics, and there being no absolute consensus as to what the "archetypes" of left and right are, has led to a number of disputes over the proper usage of "far-right" and "far-left" other than as general terms of derision.
In his essay "Left and Right: the Prospects for Liberty" [1] and "Confessions of a Right-Wing Liberal" [2], Murray Rothbard even put libertarianism on the "left", claiming that conservatives are the right and socialists merely "middle-of-the road".
The terms "left" and "right" used in this way arose during the French Revolution.

Right-wing politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In politics, right-wing, the political right, or simply The Right, are terms that refer to the segment of the political spectrum often associated with any of several strains of conservatism, the religious right, and areas of classical liberalism, or simply the opposite of left-wing politics.
Some consider the political Right to include those forms of liberalism that emphasize the free market more than egalitarianism in wealth, but many free-market advocates, including most libertarians, share certain political ideologies with the left-wing and conceive of a two-dimensional political spectrum that they say more accurately portrays their political position.
Many libertarians do not consider themselves to be right wing and reject the traditional two-dimensional political spectrum, preferring to think in terms of liberty vs. authority rather than socialism vs. capitalism.

Right-wing politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Those on the right are sometimes called "reactionary" by their opponents, a pejorative that first arose to refer to those whose politics was formed in reaction against the French Revolution, or more currently "wingnuts", derived from "right-wing nut".
For example, the Log Cabin Republicans align on the right in the context of the U.S.'s gay community, but generally appear within the Republican Party as part of the left wing of the party.
A more obscure strand of right wing thought, often associated with the original right wing from the times of monarchy, supports the preservation of wealth and power in the hands that have traditionally held them, social stability, and national solidarity and ambition.

Far-left - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The far-left and the Radical Left often overlap in terms of belief, tactics, strategy and organizational affiliation, but the far-left is a more general term that can include groups and politics that the Radical Left in particular might explicitly oppose and denounce.
Sometimes the term "far left" is used pejoratively by those on the right wing to describe any view they perceive as hostile to capitalism.
In nations where Communist parties are not acceptable, like the United States, it can simply mean to the "Left of the most left-wing member of the legislature." "Far-Left" can also describe groups who support an intense "cultural revolution" on anti-traditional lines, like the most extreme thinkers in Radical Feminism.

Alan Maass: Nader and the Politics of Lesser Evils
The logic is self-defeating--preventing the U.S. left from ever developing a genuine political alternative outside the Democratic Party and allowing the Democrats to move ever rightward politically without fear of losing their liberal voting base.
This reasoning allows Democrats like Al Gore to position themselves just barely to the left of their Republican opponents, offering nothing to the party's liberal and working-class base but their claim to be the "lesser evil."
But votes for Pat Buchanan of the right-wing Reform Party were greater than George Bush's margin of defeat in Wisconsin, Oregon, Iowa and New Mexico in 2000--yet no one called Buchanan a "spoiler."
