Peace treaty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A peace treaty also is often not used to end a civil war, especially in cases of a failed secession, as it implies mutual recognition of statehood.
In the case of large conflicts between numerous parties there may be one global treaty covering all issues or separate treaties signed between each party.
In such cases such as with the American Civil War is usually ended when the armies of the losing side surrenders and the government collapses.

When the Balkan delegates and the representatives of the great powers finally met for the second time at London on May 20 they found a treaty embodying the original terms of the powers all ready for them to sign.
They demurred at first, but when, on May 27, Sir Edward Grey, frankly told them that they must either sign or leave London they signed without much further delay on May 30, 1913.
It was not until April 20 that the Balkan States finally agreed to accept the mediation of the powers.

At the insistence of Pyongyang, the U.S. Department of State is currently negotiating an exclusive peace treaty between the United States and North Korea that would replace the existing armistice.
On this issue, there should be no compromise.
Weary of bloodshed, U.S. Army General Mark W. Clark, Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command, and representatives from North Korea and China signed a Military Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953--an armistice between North Korean forces and the United Nations, not the United States.

The treaty further put the Ryukyus (Okinawa) under U.S trusteeship, which served as an appendage of the United States until a 1971 act of self determination in which the Okinawans voted to become a prefecture of Japan.
The treaty does not formally state which nations are sovereign over these areas, a fact that some supporters of Taiwan independence use to justify Taiwanese self-determination according to Article 77b of the Charter of the United Nations.

As a result, the Senate was strongly against the Versailles Treaty and refused to ratify it.
Nobody would make even the slightest move to enforce the clauses of the Treaty of Versailles, and this was the reason that Hitler’s army became powerful enough to threaten European peace once again.
The faults in the Treaty of Versailles were great, but the faults of those who refused to later enforce it were far greater.

USATODAY.com - North Korea suggests peace treaty to settle nuclear dispute
WASHINGTON — North Korea said Wednesday that the best way to resolve its nuclear standoff with the United States would be to replace a 51-year-old armistice with a peace treaty ending the Korean War, to be signed by North Korea, South Korea and the United States.
The Bush administration says it might talk about a peace treaty but only after North Korea agrees to the United States' long-standing demand for "complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement" of its nuclear program.
Labeled by President Bush as part of an "axis of evil" with Iran and Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the North Korean government says a peace treaty would be a deterrent to an attack by the United States.

Six-Party Format Could Be Used for Korea Peace Treaty
The United States might consider a peace treaty with North Korea, but only after resolution of the nuclear issue through the Six-Party Talks, the State Department said May 3 in response to a question taken at its regular briefing the same day.
In that regard, he suggested that, after resolution of the nuclear issue, the six parties might be able to work together to seek to replace the armistice agreement on the Korean Peninsula with a permanent peace mechanism.
According to the State Department, Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly suggested at the second round of Six-Party Talks in Beijing in February that, "after resolution of the nuclear issue, the six parties might be able to work together to seek to replace the armistice agreement on the Korean peninsula with a permanent peace mechanism."
