Property law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The modern law of landlord and tenant in common law jurisdictions retains the influence of the common law and, particularly, the laissez-faire philosophy that dominated the law of contract and the law of property in the 19th century.
Property law is the area of law that governs the various forms of ownership in real property (land as distinct from personal or movable possessions) and in personal property, within the common law legal system.
In some jurisdictions, historically all property was owned by the monarch and it devolved through feudal land tenure or other feudal systems of loyalty and fealty.

Intellectual property - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Furthermore, in the United States physical property laws are generally part of state law, while copyright law is in the main measure federal.
The exclusive rights conferred by intellectual property laws can generally be transferred (with or without consideration), licensed (or rented), or mortgaged to third parties.
To give three examples from US law, copyright infringement is not punishable by laws against theft or trespass, but rather by an entirely different set of laws with different penalties.

This can mean computer law, new media law, the law of contracts between HTML editors and their customers, entertainment law, intellectual property law, criminal law relating to pornography, or anything else involving the Internet.
Most law school patent courses are of no help at all in practicing patent law, nor are they of any help in passing the patent bar exam.
Some people who say they do computer law are negotiating contracts and licenses relating to computers and software, others deal with tax consequences of software (is it goods or services, is it tangible or intangible?), and still others deal with copyright issues.

When we speak of the law of intellectual property, we are generally speaking of the law of a particular jurisdiction like the United States, France or China.
A practitioner is, in the common case, only concerned with the law of his or her jurisdiction.
This area of law has also expanded to encompass licensing, biotechnology and other legal or non-legal subject areas that are related to conceptions of property that are abstract in nature.

10 Big Myths about copyright explained
Copyright law was recently amended by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which changed net copyright in many ways.
The "fair use" exemption to (U.S.) copyright law was created to allow things such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education about copyrighted works without the permission of the author.
While copyright law makes it technically illegal to reproduce almost any new creative work (other than under fair use) without permission, if the work is unregistered and has no real commercial value, it gets very little protection.
