 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Reformation
The history of the Reformation shows incontestably that the civil power was the chief factor in spreading it in all lands, and that in the last analysis it was not religious, but dynastic, political, and social interests which proved decisive.
With the exception of Bishop Ronow of Roskilde, who died in prison (1544), all the bishops agreed to resign and to refrain from opposing the new doctrine, whereupon they were set at liberty and their property was restored to them.
The Reformed clergy thus possessed from the beginning only such rights as the civil authorities were pleased to assign them.
